St.Petersburg (RUS),
300-years of St Petersburg Russian Cup, 18-26.10.2003

Few words about the winner. It is almost impossible to tell something particular about Vladimir Burmakin. When playing as White, he always puts the king's bishop to g2, while with black pieces he creates a pawn ridge c6-d5. Most frequently, he wins in the endgame, without beauties and seemingly in occasional way. Having took a lead, he never rejects the draw offer letting other players come up with him. In round 4 he obtained a lost position against Evgeny Miroshnichenko but the latter failed to find a decisive continuation and obtained an endgame being a pawn down. The young insisting Bator Sambuev forced Vladimir to work hard by imposing a complicated struggle that resulted in Vladimir's score +5. Other players ceased trying, and the resulting loading of the winner was twice less than that one of any other player!
