Sutovsky Emil (ISR) - Ehlvest Jaan (EST) Reykjavik (Iceland) B23

[#] 1.e4 c5 2.c3 e6 3.ge2 d6 4.g3 f6 5.g2 c6 6.O-O e7 7.d3 b8 8.f4 d7 9.e3 O-O 10.d4 cxd4 11.xd4 a6 12.a4 c7 13.d2 xd4 14.xd4 b6 Sutovsky explains this moment in the following way: 'If Black managesto deploy his bishop on b7,then he obtains an opportunity of meeting f4-f5 with e6-e5. Therefore, I resolved for the complicated play with sacrifices, which is difficult to calculate completely not only in a rapid game, but also in the classical one'. 15.f5!? e5 16.f6!? xf6 17.xf6 gxf6 18.f1 e7?! All the same, Black cannot protect his f6-pawn, and this move is just a loss of tempo.

[It would rather be difficult for White to prove the correctness of his set-up after the active: 18...b5!? 19.axb5 (Sutovsky intended to play: 19.h6!? there , but in the case of: 19...c4 20.xe5 c5 21.h1 fxe5 , White cannot find anything better, than the perpetual check. (if: 21...xe5 , then: 22.f5! exf5 23.d5 )) 19...axb5 20.xf6 b4 21.e2 a6 , and Black's chances are not worse.]

19.h6 b7 20.xf6

[The apparently very strong: 20.f4!? , does not win immediately due to: 20...f5! 21.exf5 f6! , and Black holds on, while his b7-bishop turns out to be very opportune there.]

20...g6 21.g5 fe8 22.h4 e5 23.e3 h8

[White's task would be more difficult after: 23...h6! 24.f5 g7 Then he should have calculated a complicate variation: 25.xh6! xh6 26.xf7 f8 27.xe7 xf5 28.xb7 ff8 29.xb8 xb8 30.f1 , and, though White's advantage is rather obvious, it is extremely difficult for him to realize it.]

24.h5 f8 25.f5 c8 26.f2 e6 27.g5

[White obtains a huge advantage after: 27.d5 ]

27...d7 28.g6?!

[Here too, stronger is: 28.d5 ]

28...fxg6?!

[Black is missing a perfect opportunity of: 28...f6! 29.xf6 g8 30.h4 xg3!! 31.g6 xh4 32.xg3 xg3 33.xg3 , with a probable draw.]

29.xe7 xe7 30.hxg6 hxg6? A severe positional mistake, which spoils the game finally. Black's own g-pawn deprives him of any active counter play.

[Balck's best surviving chance was: 30...g8! , when both his rooks were in action.]

31.d2! g7 32.xd6 be8 33.d1 f7 34.e3 c5 35.xb6 e6 36.d5 d7 37.xa6 b8 38.b3 bd8 39.f1 d4 40.f6 g8 Black resigned.
