Linares, It (cat. XX)

The ‘super-tournament of the year’ has finished in Linares, Spain. The first place there was shared by the Russian grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik and candidate for the world title, the Hungarian Peter Leko. Vladimir was the sole player, who managed without defeats, while Leko obtained more wins, than anyone else in the tournament. The latter was awarded by the honorary prize – a petroleum tower model. more

‘Russia’ is a generous soul....
The Aeroflot open tournament takes place in the world’s largest hotel ‘Russia’, featuring about 3000 apartments. The competition is worthy of the hotel. More than 480 chess players from 38 countries take part in three Swiss tournaments. An overall number of the grandmasters there is more than 150, and 143 of them are competing for the main prize, which is $25000. There are 36 prizes in A tournament, the second and third ones are $15000 and $10000 correspondingly. The last 6 prizes are at $500 each one. Quite impressive are the first prizes in B and C tournaments, $6000 and $3000 correspondingly.
