Moscow, Ch Moscow, 16-30.04.2003

Moscow champion Evgeny Najer says that hehas nothing to be proud with anything in thecreative meaning of the word. Instead ofsome game with annotations of the luckywinner we present an episode, both tragic andfunny, which decided the gold medal issue.

Grandmaster Evgeny Vorobiov tells about the 81th Moscow championship and about himself
In round 1 I played against a strong master Yaroslav Ulko. It seemed to me that the tournament was over when it even had not started yet.

St.Petersburg, Ch St.Petersburg, 16-28.04.2003
IM Denis Evseev won the St.Petersburg 76th male chmpionship
It was quite unexpected for me to win the St.Petersburg champion title in my first effort. Honestly, I am pride with my achievement. I love this city and I always dreamed of conquering it.
Before the tournament started, nobody expected Svidler, Sakaev and Khalifman to take part in it, while Yemelin and Aseev were not in town at the moment. Nevertheless 7 of 13 participants were grandmasters which was quite sufficient for the tournament. Almost half of the players were of approximately equal strength and the struggle was quite tense in the upper half of the tournament table. The leaders changed each other up to the very last round. I was extremely lucky there having not obtained difficult positions and having avoided the defeats. When it is said about someone being lucky as the first prize winner that perfectly suits my performance in the championship.
I liked very much Popov’s and Lugovoi’s playing. I would say that they two were quite decent candidates for the first place. However Valery Popov lost two games of 3 in the end and Alexei Lugovoi had fallen a victim of an accident - he decided to take a nap before the game shortly and overslept! Finally both of them scored half a point less than me.
