and $44.000 correspondingly, and also 39 man and 17 women qualified
for the next FIDE world championship. Round 1 in the female
championship was held simultaneously with round 4 in the male
championship. It would have been extremely interesting to compare
the play in both tournaments,
especially when relaying
the games over the Internet allowed |

particularly should one compare? What criteria could be applicable
in such a comparison? Meanwhile, the situation on the boards changed

Heviz (Hungary) Ch Hungary
12-20.05.2003
The Hungarian
53th championship was held in Heviz. Despite usual absence of Peter
Leko and Zsuzsa Polgar the tournament was traditionally strong in
its composition. Zoltan Almasi played there, the 3rd board of the
Hungarian national team. All decent Hungarian players also took part
including the evergreen Lajos Portisch! There were not a single
player rated below 2500 which resulted in the hight XIII category of
the tournament. There was not serious struggle for the first
prize because Almasi was in a perfect sporting form. He scored 7
points out of 9, for 1.5 points ahead of Robert Ruk and Lajos
Portisch. Zoltan had a nice opportunity of training himself and he
added to his high rating!
1. Almasi Zoltan -
7.0; 2. Ruck Robert - 5.5; 3.
Portisch Lajos - 5.5; 4. Sax Gyula - 5.0;
5. Berkes Ferenc - 4.5; 6. Acs
Peter - 4.5: 7-9. Gyimesi Zoltan, Cao Sang, Varga
