Chess Weekly #14

30.05-14.06.2003

Vl. Malakhov, A. Graf, T.Kosintseva,
Z. Azmaiparashvili, P Cramling, V. Chmilite.

1. Azmaiparashvili - 9.5; 2. Malakhov - 9.0;
3. Graf - 9.0; 4-14. Georgiev Kir., Kharlov, Sakaev, Iordachescu, Kobalia, Sulskis, Sutovsky, Aronian, Ivanchuk, Galkin, Moiseenko - 8.5...

The European personal male and female championships has just ended in Istanbul. The experience prevailed over the youth. The 43 years old grandmaster Zurab Azmaiparashvili, FIDE vice president and president of the Georgian chess federation, won the male tournament. The Sweden Pia Kramling became the female champion after having been a title candidate in 80s. Kramling beat Viktorija Cmilyte in tie break. Cmilyte is a wife to one of the world’s strongest players, Alexei Shirov. Vladimir Malakhov (the 2nd place) and tatiana Kosintseva (the 3rd place) were the best Russian players. Vladimir could well have became the champion because in the decisive game his opponent (who was Zurab Azmaiparashvili) confused the moves and left his rook under attack. However Malakhov allowed Azmaiparashvili to take the move back according to his own conception of nobleness (which contradicted to FIDE rules).

Leon (Spain) 5-9.06.2003

Leon city acquired its original trademark in June 1998, when Gary Kasparov in his match against Veselin Topalov tested his invention, the ‘advanced chess’. When playing an ‘advanced chess’ game a chess player may consult computer. Then the main time of the match ended draw and Kasparov managed to win only in tie-break when consulting computer was forbidden. The match arose a dramatic attention of the chess community; among the many others an opinion emerged that using a computer was leveling players’ class. A year later Vishi Anand refuted this point of view convincingly by beating Anatoly Karpov with a smashing score 5-1. The 12th world champion is a player of the pre-computer age nevertheless and the ‘iron second’ rather hindered his play than helped him.
