Azmaiparashvili. The European champion 2003.
You have
found out about the most spectacular episodes of the struggle in the
European championship from our previous issues. Here we present some
fragments from games of the winners. Azmaiparashvili started this
tournament being the third player according his ELO rating. Despite
this, for some reason unknown nobody considered his chances in the
competition seriously. He made five "grandmasters'" draws (whoever
invited this term?), but his final result was outstanding, he scored
+6! Four of his six wins were obtained when he played with black
pieces. One should remember that Zurab's opening repertoire with
black pieces is deliberately weird and it brought him only heavy
trouble when playing against the elite players. A typical example is
his terrific defeat against Kasparov in the most principled match
Russia - Georgia in Moscow Olympiad 1994. However, he also obtained
several bright victories as Black especially one over Karpov. It was
in 1983 when Karpov used to lose approximately one game per year.
