Evgeny
Bareev's opponents prepared to celebrate a victory in Enghien les
Bains not for a single time. However, each time the Russian
dispelled their hopes. Thanks to his superb technique, exceptional
inventiveness, and also to his luck and to some help from his
opponents, Evgeny has reached the very top.

Evgenia Chasovnikova tells about the winners of the European
championship (women).
The tournament gathered all the glory
of women's chess except Chiburdanidze and Kosteniuk. After round 8,
it seemed that the question of title is decided since Alisa
Galliamova left all the competitors behind scoring one point more
than the closest chaser. However Alisa managed to obtain only half a
point in three games remaining.
Then one Russian leader changed
another in the tournament. Tanya Kosintseva played brilliantly
having obtained wins over Stefanova, Skripchenko and Galliamova!
Alas, Tanya lost in the last round. Her 3rd prize could hardly be
considered a failure, because apart from qualifying for the world
championship Tanya (together with her sister Nadezhda who also
qualified for the world championship) obtained almost $6500.
The
most experienced Pia Kramling (Sweden) obtained the first prize. She
was a grandmaster when many women's chess stars of today have not
even been born. The champion played in a rather solid, not bright
manner "drying out" her younger and hotter opponents. Games
