Chess Weekly #17

Philadelphia (USA), 31st World Open ,
28.06-6.07.2003

The 31th World Open attracted many competent chess players in Philadelphia. There were 37 grandmasters among 238 participants! The organizers provided a prize fund reaching $180,000 which explained a rather cautious play - it would have been extremely annoying to miss some good prize due to some inaccuracy! Places 1-10 were shared by I.Smirin, J.Ehlvest, A.Onishchuk, L.Yudasin, A.Goldin, A.Shabalov, A.Voitkevich, G.Zaichik, N. Firman and B.Annakov having scored 7 out of 9 points. Everyone of them has a grandmaster title except N.Firman - however this being a rather temporary difference. Smirin and Ehlvest had better additional coefficients and they played a tie break for the first prize and extra $500. Jaan obtained money and all the glory.

1-10. Smirin, Onischuk, Yudasin, Ehlvest, Goldin, Shabalov,
Wojtkiewicz, Zaitshik, Firman, Annakov - 7.0/9.

Nakhchivan (AZE), Ch World(juniors)(under 20),
22.06.-3.07.2003

Chess players from 30 countries took part in the championship. The most impressive teams were ones from Azerbaijan and India. The Indian grandmaster Ganguly did outstanding on start, being the sole player who scored 100 per cent after round 3. But then he played not so successfully… After round 6, grandmaster Gaidar Guseinov took the lead with 5 points out of 6. The young grandmaster has achieved a success at the European male (adult!) championship just before this tournament, having qualified for the World Cup. Nevertheless, it is extremely difficult to play two tournaments in a row and Gaidar scored only 3 points in last 6 rounds. His game against a compatriot Shakhriar Mamedyarov defined an outcome of struggle for the first prize. After having won that game, the rating favorite Mamedyarov became irrepressible. He scored 5 points in last 6 rounds, having defeated such 'heavy-weights' as Vugar Gashimov (Azerbaijan) and Pentala Harikrishna (India).
