Chess Weekly #7
| Budapest
(Hungary) It (cat. XVII) 11th-20th April
Peter Leko is preparing for his match with Vladimir Kramnik.
The Hungarian organizers decided to support their compatriot candidate
by conducting a XVII category tournament in Budapest, where five
native top players and five foreign ones took part. Incidentally
the question about the strongest Hungarian player had been decided.
However, the tournament failed to give a clear answer, since Judith
Polgar had finished ahead of Peter Leko by 0.5 point but lost their
personal encounter.
Nigel Short celebrated the victory in the tournament, having demonstrated
his best qualities. Couple years ago, Short, the world vice champion
1993 promised not to play in the super tournaments anymore, but
awoke from his everlasting slumbers in Budapest indeed and confirmed
his expertise in the Sicilian defense as White.
